This instrument, commissioned by Pawel Siwczak and crafted by Paul McNulty in Divisov in 2011, holds a unique historical connection. It closely resembles the preferred piano of Mozart and nearly found its way into Beethoven's own collection, making it an ideal choice for interpreting Classical and early Romantic compositions. Modelled after an Anton Walter (1752–1826) fortepiano dating back to around 1805, this instrument pays homage to one of Vienna's most esteemed fortepiano makers, known for producing approximately 700 instruments.
Paul McNulty, the original builder, has meticulously maintained this fortepiano. To adapt to the specific humidity conditions of London, a new soundboard was expertly installed, followed by routine adjustments. Notably, it was selected by the renowned Sir András Schiff for his Wigmore Hall concert series dedicated to Joseph Haydn's works in March 2022. Moreover, Glyndebourne Opera has sought its use in two festival productions.
Renowned for its outstanding tonal qualities, including a rich and nuanced sound, a versatile tonal palette, a responsive and light touch, and an elegant aesthetic, this fortepiano is a testament to historical accuracy and exceptional performance. It represents an excellent choice for professional musicians and dedicated music enthusiasts seeking an instrument of both historical significance and musical excellence.
