Presenting the "Villa Medici Harpsichord" – a meticulously crafted reproduction inspired by the renowned original housed at the French Academy in Rome. Built in 1980 for Stanley Sadie, the esteemed editor of Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, by the accomplished artisan Mark Stevenson (known for making an almost identical instrument for Sir Paul McCartney).
This exceptional instrument has undergone thorough restoration, overseen by Mark Ransom in 2014 and Alan Gotto in 2017, with a particular focus on enhancing its touch responsiveness. The harpsichord is celebrated for its rich, mellifluous sound, distinguished by its resonant qualities and absence of harsh or metallic tones.
Prized for its adaptability, the keyboards transpose between A=415/440, and the stand can be easily disassembled for efficient transportation. Adding a unique touch, two candle holders grace either side of the music desk. The instrument boasts exquisite Flemish paper ornaments and elegant marble-effect painting, while the lid proudly bears two Latin inscriptions:
"Dum vixi tacui, mortua dulce cano" — A poignant epitaph for the tree from which this harpsichord was born, reminding us that in life's silence, it now sings sweetly in its afterlife.
"Sic transit gloria mundi" — So passes the glory of the world, much like the fleeting sound that, with time, fades into memory.
This harpsichord represents a harmonious fusion of historical significance, craftsmanship, and artistic elegance—a valuable addition for discerning musicians and collectors seeking an instrument that embodies both heritage and excellence.
